Plant Transport
Water transport
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Xylem | Water- and mineral-transporting vascular tissue with spiral thickening of lignin on side walls. |
Phloem | Transports food made in the leaves to other parts of the plant. Composed of sieve tubes. |
Autotroph | Organism capable of making food from inorganic compounds and energy, e.g. green plants. |
Osmosis | The way in which water moves through a semipermeable membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration |
Diffusion | Way in which molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
Root Pressure | When water is drawn into the roots by osmosis the extra volume causes pressure to build up. This pressure pushes water up through the xylem from the root. |
Transpiration | The loss of water by evaporation through the leaves and other aerial parts of the plant |
Stomata | Tiny holes on the undersides of the leaves that allow water vapour to escape |
