Plant Transport

Water transport

TermDefinition
Xylem Water- and mineral-transporting vascular tissue with spiral thickening of lignin on side walls.
Phloem Transports food made in the leaves to other parts of the plant. Composed of sieve tubes.
Autotroph Organism capable of making food from inorganic compounds and energy, e.g. green plants.
Osmosis The way in which water moves through a semipermeable membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration
Diffusion Way in which molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Root Pressure When water is drawn into the roots by osmosis the extra volume causes pressure to build up. This pressure pushes water up through the xylem from the root.
Transpiration The loss of water by evaporation through the leaves and other aerial parts of the plant
Stomata Tiny holes on the undersides of the leaves that allow water vapour to escape
