Biomolecules Vocab: Structure and Function of the 4 biomolecules

biomolecule a large complex molecule that is essential to life. It contains the element carbon.
carbohydrate a molecule made of one or more sugars. It provides short-term energy.
lipid a molecule that has many carbon and hydrogen atoms. Nonpolar. Insulates, waterproofs, provides long-term energy, and is the major component of the cell membrane.
protein made up of amino acids. Provides structure and support for cells and tissues.
nucleic acid stores genetic information and helps in protein synthesis
dna double stranded molecule that stores genetic information in the form of a code.
rna single stranded molecule that assists in protein synthesis.
monosaccharide type of carboydrate made of one sugar.
disaccharide type of carboydrate made of two sugars
polysaccharide type of carboydrate made of many sugars
nucleotide made of a phosphate group, sugar and a nitrogen base. Is the subunit for nucleic acids.
amino acid link together to make proteins.
peptide bond the bond that links amino acids together
