5th- State of Matter
5th- Matter
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space; what everything is made of |
State of Matter | The different forms that matter can exist; the main three include solid, liquid, and gas |
Solid | A state of matter that has a definite shape and volume that will not change unless an outside force is used; the particles are tightly packed and vibrate |
Liquid | A state of matter that has a definite volume but its shape can change depending on the container; the particles move past each other at a medium speed |
Gas | A state of matter that can change in shape and volume depending on the container; the particles are moving at a fast speed and spread out |
Freezing | A phase transition/ change where a liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is lowered below its freezing point |
Melting | A phase transition/ change of a substance from a solid to a liquid when its temperature is risen above its freezing point |
Condensation | A phase transition/ change from the gas phase into the liquid phase when its temperature is lowered |
Evaporation | A phase transition/ change from the liquid phase to vapor when its temperature increases |
Freezing Point | The temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid; changes with different substances |
