Chem Set 3

Atoms, Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

QuestionAnswer
Solution aka homogeneous mixture; A mixture in which one substance is completely dissolved in another
Alloy a solid mixture of two or more metals, ex. brass b/c it is a mixture of copper and zinc
Compound A pure substance that chemically combines with two or more different elements
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration
Homogeneous Mixture mixture of 2 or more substances looks the same throughout
Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down, Found on the PT
Atom The basic particle from which all elements are made
Chemistry the study of matter and how it changes
Colloid A mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out (ex.milk, fog)
Concentrated A solution that has a lot of solute dissolved in it
Dilute A solution that has only a little solute dissolved in it
Distillation This method is used to separate a mixture of 2 liquids by using their different boiling points
Evaporation liquid solutions can change to a gas, leaving solid components behind
Filtration used to separate solids from liquids or gases using a filter that allows the fluid (liquid/gas) to pass through but not the solid
Magnetic Attraction substances that can be separated from a mixture using a magnet
Mass A measure of how much matter is in an object
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mixture a combination of 2 or more elements or compounds not chemically bonded
Molecule 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together
Saturated A solution that contains the MOST dissolved solute as is possible at a given temperature
Substance kind of matter with same properties
Suspension a heterogeneous mixture that has larger particles that will eventually sink to the bottom
Universal Solvent the description of water since it can dissolve so many substances
Volume The amount of space taken up by an object
