acute glomerulonephritis (AGN) The rapid onset of inflammation of the glomerulus of the kidney.
acute renal failure The sudden cessation of kidney function.
anuria The absence of urine.
bladder A membranous sac or receptacle for a secretion; the gallbladder, urinary bladder.
Bowman's Capsule Part of the renal corpuscle; surrounds the glomerulus of the nephron.
calculi Commonly called stones; usually composed of minerals salts.
calyces Two or more calyx.
calyx the cuplike division of the kidney pelvis.
catheterization To insert a catheter into a cavity (e.g., urinary bladder to remove urine) to remove body fluid.
chronic renal failure The end result of the progressive loss of kidney function.
cortex The outer portion of the kidney.
cystitis Inflammation of the urinary bladder.
dialysis Removal of the products of urine from the blood by passage of the solutes through a membrane.
dribbling Uncontrolled leakage of urine from the bladder.
dysuria Painful urination; difficulty in urination.
elimination To remove, get rid of, exclude; also to pass urine from the bladder or stool from the bowel.
excretion The process of expelling material from the body.
fistula An abnormal tubelike passage from a normal cavity or an abscess to a free surface.
frequency The need to void urine often, though usually only a small amount at one time.
glomerulus The microscope cluster of capillaries within the Bowman's capsule of the nephron.
graft a constructed part.
hematuria Blood in the urine.
hemodialysis A process whereby blood is passed through a thin membrane and exposed to a dialysate solution to remove waste products.
hesitancy Difficulty in starting a urine stream.
hillum The recessed area of the kidney where the ureter and blood vessels enter.
intravenous pyelogram (IVP) The insertion of a radiopaque material into the vein for the purpose of x-raying the kidneys and ureters.
invasive procedure diagnostic methods involving entry into living tissue.
kidney A bean-shaped organ that excretes urine and is located retroperitoneally, high in the back of the abdominal cavity.
lithotripsy Destruction of stone in the urinary system; stone crusher.
medulla The inner section of the kidney.
nephron The structural and functional unit of the kidney.
nephrotic syndrome Term applied to renal disease of whatever cause characterized by massive edema, proteinuria, and usually elevation of serum, cholesterol and lipids.
nocturia Having to void at night.
noninvasive procedure A diagnostic method not requiring entry into body tissue.
oliguria scanty production of urine
peritoneal Pertaining to the peritoneum; the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the abdominal organs
polycystic kidney disease A condition of multiple cysts in the kidney.
polyuria Excessive secretion and discharge of urine.
ptosis A drooping or drooping of an organ or part; for example, the eyelid or the kidney.
pyelonephritis Inflammation of the kidney, pelvis, and nephrons.
renal Pertaining to the kidney.
residual Pertaining to that which is left as a residue.
retention Inability to void urine that is present in the bladder.
secretion Separation of certain materials from the blood by the activity of a gland.
stricture The narrowing of an opening, tube, or canal, such as the urethra or esophagus.
uremia A condition in which products normally found in the urine are found in the blood.
ureter A tube carrying urine from the kidney to urinary bladder.
urethra A membranous canal for the external discharge of urine from the bladder.
urgency the sudden need to expel urine or stool.
urinary Pertaining to secreting and containing urine; the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.
urinary meatus The opening through which urine passes from body.
urine Fluid secreted from the blood by the kidneys, stored in the bladder, and discharged from the body by voiding.
