auscultation the process of listening for sounds within the body
bimanual two-handed; with both hand
bruit an adventitious sound of venous or arterial origin heard on auscultation
coordination a state of harmonious adjustment or function
digital rectal exam (DRE) examination performed by the provider to check for abnormalities of organs or other structures in the pelvis and lower abdomen
duration the amount of time a thing continues
gait manner of walking
guaiac test paper a screening agent to test for hidden blood
heart murmur a sound produced by the leakage of blood through a heart valve
hernia a projection of a part from its normal location
inspection the first part of a physical examination; close observation
manipulation the passive movement of a joint to determine the range of flexion and extension
occult obscure; hidden
palpation the technique of examination using the fingers or hands
percussion tapping the body lightly but sharply to determine the position, size and consistency of an underlying structure
peripheral side vision while looking straight forward
physical examination of the body
pitch the frequency of vibrations of sound that enable one to classify sound on a scale from high to low
resonance the intensification and prolongation of sound by reflection or by vibration of a nearby object
scribe a person who documents by hand or enters data into the EHR as a profession and helps providers keep track of records
spirometry to measure the volume of inhaled and exhaled air
symmetry the state in which one part exactly corresponds to another in size, shape and position
turgor normal tension
visceral pertaining to viscera, the internal organs, especially the abdomen
