Defecation and Feces

MEDOP 230- Gastroenterology: Defecation and Feces Diseases

TermDefinition
Constipation Failure to have regular, soft bowel movements.
Diarrhea Abnormally frequent, loose, and watery feces; involves increased peristalsis that moves the feces through the large intestine before water is absorbed.
Flatulence Excessive amounts of gas in the stomach or intestines.
Hematochezia Blood in the feces; bright red blood indicates a lower GI bleed and melena indicates a stomach or esophagus bleed.
Steatorrhea Feces that contains undigested fats due to a lack of the enzyme lipase.
