Cardiac catheterization Procedure to study anatomy and pressures in the heart •A catheter is inserted into the femoral or brachial vein and threaded to either side of the heart.
Right heart catheterization measures pressures in the right atrium and ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Left heart catheterization involves use of contrast dye to show blockages in the coronary arteries.
Cardiac exercise stress test Procedure to evaluate the heart’s response to exercise in patients with chest pain, palpitations, or arrhythmias. •Patient walks on a treadmill while an ECG is performed.•If necessary, patients may instead ride a stationary bike or undergo a pharmacologic stress test.
Electrocardiography (ECG, EKG) Procedure that records the electrical activity of the heart. •Electrodes are placed on the limbs and chest and used to show activity from 12 angles.•Tracings of each pattern are used to create an electrocardiogram.
Electrophysiologystudy (EPS) Procedure that maps the heart’s conduction system to find an ectopic site causing arrhythmia. •While an ECG is performed, catheters are inserted into veins and guided to the heart.•The catheters send out impulses to stimulate the heart and locate the ectopic site.
Holter monitor Procedure to document infrequent arrhythmias involves use of a portable ECG monitor to continuously track a patient’s heart rate and rhythm for 24 hours.
Telemetry Procedure to monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm in the hospital .•The patient wears electrodes that transmit ECG tracings to a central monitoring station.•A nurse at the station watches multiple patients’ tracings simultaneously.
