Skeletal system vocabulary.

Skeletal system is made of organs called bones
diaphysis the two exrtremities or ends are each called epiphysis
qmedullary canal is a cavity in the diaphysis
yellow marrow fat cells
endosteum is a membrane that lines medullary canal and keeps the yellow marrow intact
red marrow is found in certain bones such as the vertebrae,ribs,sternum,and in the proximal ends of the humerus and femur
periosteum which contains blood vessals,lymph vessels and osteoblasts,special cells that form new bone tissue.
Axial skeleton form the main trunk of the body and is composed of the skull,spinal column,ribs,and breastbone.
appendicular skeleton forms the extremites and is composed of the shoulder girdle,arm bones,pelvic girdle,and leg bones.
Cranium is the spnerical structure that surrounds and protects the brain
fontaneis or "soft spots",allow for the enlargement of the skull as brain growth occurs.
sutures are areas where the cranial bones have joined together
sinuses are air spaces in the bones of the skull that act as resonating chambers for the voice.
foramina are openings in bones that allow nerves and blood vessels to enter or leave the bones.
Vertebrae the spinal column is made up of 26 bones
ribs costae
sternum breastbone is the last bone of the axial skeleton
clavicles and scapulas the shoulder of pectoral girdle is made of two clavicles(collarbones) and two scapulas(shoulder bones)
humerus bones of each arm include one humeruos
radium (lower arm on thumb side)
ulna large bone of lower arm with as projecxtion called the olecranon process at its upper end forming the elbow)
Carpals arm has eight (wrist)
Mertacarpals five (palm of the hand)
phalanges fourteen(fingers)
oscoxae pelvic girdle is made of two (coxal or hip, bones)
Femur leg has one(thigh)
patella one (knee cap)
tibia one
fibula lower leg
metatarsals (instep of foot)(five)
phalanges fourteen (toes)
joints are areas where two or more bones join together
ligaments help hols long bones together at joints
