Question | Answer |
---|---|
Meiosis | The type of cell division used to create gametes. Results in 4 genetically unique gametes at a time. |
Mitosis | The type of cell division used to create somatic cells. Results in 2 genetically identical somatic cells at a time. |
Cell division | When cells divide to create more cells. |
Somatic | Cells in the body. These cells are not used for reproduction, and are diploid. |
Gamete | Cells used to combine DNA during sexual reproduction. These cells are haploid. |
Fertilization | The combination of 2 haploid gametes. |
Zygote | The diploid cell resulting from fertilization. |
Diploid | A cell with a full set of chromosomes. |
Haploid | A cell with a half set of chromosomes. |
23 | The number of chromosomes in a human gamete. |
46 | The number of chromosomes in a human somatic cell. |
n | An abbreviation for haploid. |
2n | An abbreviation for diploid. |
Sexual reproduction | Reproduction involving the combination of DNA from 2 parent organisms. |
Asexual reproduction | Reproduction where 1 parent makes genetically identical offspring. |
Parent cell | A cell before it divides. |
Daughter cell | A cell resulting from cell division. |
Interphase | The part of a cell's life span where it grows, carries out cell activities, and duplicates its DNA before it begins dividing. |
Ovum/Egg | The female gamete in animals. |
Sperm | The male gamete in animals. |
Polar Body | Unused cells resulting in meiosis in females. These cells are incapable of being fertilized. |
