Urinalysis A test performed on time on urine to determine its charactertics
Physical (UA) In urine specimen testing it refers to the color, clarity, volume, odor and physical gravity
Chemical (UA) The reagent strip test readings performed on urine specimen
Hematuria Blood in the urine
Guaiac A solution used to test for occult blood in the stool
Sputum Substance ejected from the mouth containing saliva and mucus; usually refers to material coughed up from the bronchi
Erythrocyte Red blood cells
Leukocyte White blood cells
Hematoma Tumor or swelling that contains blood
Hemoconcentration A decrease in plasma volume, which causes a simultaneous increase in the concentration of red blood cells
Lancet A sharp pointed instrument used to pierce the skin to obtain a capillary blood sample
Tourniquet
Any constrictor used on an extremity to produce pressure on an artery and control bleeding; also used to distend veins for the withdrawal of blood of intravenous injections
Phlebotomy The process of collecting blood
Venipuncture The puncture of the vein
Plasma The liquid part of the lymph and blood
Serum Blood plasma in which clotting factors are removed naturally by allowing the blood to clot prior to isolating the liquid component.
Gauge The size of a needle bore; the smaller the number the larger the needle bore
Centrifuge A machine for the separation of heavier materials from lighter ones through the use of centrifugal force
Vital signs Of life; specifically, body temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure
Temperature Degree of heat of a living body
Pulse Throbbing in the artery caused by the beat of the heart
Respiration The taking in of oxygen and giving off of carbon dioxide; one full inhalation/ exhalation cycle
Blood pressure The fluctuating force exerted on the arterial walls as it alternately contracts and relaxes
Stethoscope An instrument used for auscultation of body sounds
