Map Scale | The relationship between the size of an object on a map and the size of the feature on Earth's surface |
Projection | A system used to transfer locations from Earth's surface to a flat map |
Thematic Map | Maps designed to show a certain theme |
Political Map | Map that primarily features countries, cities, borders and capitals |
Physical Map | Map that primarily features landforms |
Geographic Information Science (GIScience) | The development and analysis of data about Earth acquired through satellite and other electronic information technologies |
Geographic Information System (GIS) | Computer system that stores, organizes, analyzes, and displays geographic data |
Global Positioning System (GPS) | A system that determines the precise position of something on Earth through a series of satellites, tracking stations, and receivers |
Remote Sensing | The acquisition of data about Earth's surface from a satellite orbiting the planet or from other long-distance methods |
Participatory GIS (PGIS) | Community-based mapping, representing local knowledge and information. |
Geotagging | identification and storage of a piece of information by its precise latitude and longitude coordinates |
Mashup | a map that overlays data from one source on top of a map provided by a mapping service |
Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) | Creation and dissemination of geographic data contributed voluntarily and for free by individuals |
Citizen Science | scientific research by amateur scientists |
Greenwich Mean Time | The time in the zone encompassing the Prime Meridian or 0 degrees longitude |
International Date Line | Arc that follows 180 degrees long. Crossing east moves clock 24 hrs, while moving west moves clock ahead a day |
Latitude | Numbering system used to indicate the location of a specific parallels drawn on a globe and measuring distance north and south of the equator |
Longitude | Number system used to indicate a specific meridian drawn on the globe measuring distance east and west of the Prime Meridian |
Prime Meridian | The meridian, designated as 0 degrees long., that passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England |
Equator | 0 degrees latitude. An imaginary circle around the middle of the earth-divides northern and southern hemisphere |
Meridian | An arc drawn on a map between the North and South poles |
Parallel | Circles drawn around the globe parallel to the equator |
Cartogram Map | Maps that use relative size of political units to convey a value. |
Choropleth Map | Maps in which a specific variable is depicted with shading, patterns and colors. |
Dot Map | Map in which a dot represents some frequency/occurrence of the mapped variable. |
Graduated Symbol/Proportional Circle Map | Maps in which the size of the symbol varies in proportion to the intensity of the mapped variable. |
Isoline Map | Use lines of equal value to represent data. |
