Art - Renaissance

Art History studystack for definitions - Renaissance

TermDefinition
Renaissance French word for 'rebirth', it brought an explosion of art, writing and thought into the 15th Century
Fresco Painting Painting onto fresh plaster (secco), usually with tempera (paint made of egg yolk and pigment)
Humanism Intellectual movement focused on human achievements, inspired by Greek and Roman cultures.
Patron A financial supporter of artists. Church leaders spent money on artwork to 'beautify' cities, and wealthy merchants such as the Medici family were also patrons
Perspective Space realistically portrayed. The geometric problem of showing three dimensions on a flat surface was solved.
Linear Perspective Geometric systems that showed artists how to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface. The point at which the lines meet is called the vanishing point.
Foreshortening A visual effect in which things are made smaller as they recede away from the viewer. Very important in painting.
Contrapposto A pose developed by classical Greek sculptors as a means to avoid stiffness. It created the body in an 'S' shape, and made the sculpture in a more natural position.
Quattrocento The study of ancient sculpture with human anatomy to create 3-dimensional realistic statues with values of beauty and intellect.
Neo-Platonism The two meanings in art in which the artwork was able to connect with the past of Greek/Roman heritage and the present of Christianity. They believed there was a hidden agreement between Christianity and pagan mythology.
Allegorical painting The use of figures and symbols to communicate abstract ideas such as love, evil and justice - and art work that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a religious, moral, pagan or political one.
Naturalism The ability to master accuracy, weight and structure in figures, creating realistic portrayals of people and their environment
Chiaroscuro The gradual tones of light and shade used to create 3D figures on a 2D surface in a painting

Masaccio Early Renaissance, e.g 'The Expulsion of Adam and Eve'
Donatello Early Renaissance, e.g 'David'
Duccio Sienese Style, e.g 'Maestà'
da Vinci High Renaissance, e.g 'Mona Lisa', 'The Last Supper'
Byzantine Art Religious iconography, mosaics, stylised (elongated figures), lots of gold paint, etc.
Florence Realism True perspective, natural lighting, storytelling, emotion, form, etc.

Michelangelo High Renaissance, e.g 'David' and Sistine Chapel ceiling
Raphael High Renaissance, e.g 'The School of Athens', 'The Madonna of the Meadow'
