Vocabulary about gas exchange.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Gas exchange | A chemical reaction where organisms trade one type of gas in the atmosphere for another. These trades help organisms create energy. |
Photosynthesis | A type of gas exchange where organisms use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar. |
Cellular respiration | A type of gas exchange where organisms turn sugar and oxygen into energy, |
Reactant | What goes into a chemical reaction. All reactants must be there for the reaction to happen. |
Product | What is made during a chemical reaction-- what is produced. |
Water | H2O |
Carbon Dioxide | CO2 |
Glucose sugar | C6H12O6 |
Oxygen | O2 |
Energy (ATP) | The type of energy used by living things. Produced by cellular respiration. |
Autotroph | Organisms who get their sugar from photosynthesis |
Heterotroph | Organisms who get their sugar by eating things |
Mitochondria | The cell organelle that creates ATP out of sugar and oxygen |
Chloroplast | The cell organelle that does photosynthesis |
Light | Energy absorbed and stored during photosynthesis. |
