TermDefinition
gravity The attractive force between objects.
orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space.
ellipse The shape of an orbit.
constellation A p;ttern of stars that 0people imagine to represent a figure or object.
lunar eclipse Occurs during a full moon, when the Earth is between the sun and the Moon. This blocks the Sun's light from reaching the Moon.
solar eclipse When the Moon is between the sun and the Earth which blocks the sun's light to Earth.
meteor A streak of light in the sky produced by the burning of a meteroid in the Earth's atmosphere.
meteorite a streak of light that doesn't fully burn up and hits the Earth's surface
rotation The spinning motion of a planet on its axis. It is responsible for day and night.
24 hours The amount of time it takes earth to rotate once.
revolution The movement of an object around another object.
365 1/4 days The amount of time it takes Earth to travel around the Sun.
inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. It keeps the planets in their cycle.
solstice The point where the Sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky. It creates the longest day or the longest night.
June 21st The date of the summer solstice.
December 21st The date of the winter solstice.
equinox When there are equal hours of day and night
March 21st The date of the spring equinox.
September 21st The date of the fall equinox.
New Moon When the back side of the Moon is being lit up and the side facing Earth is in darkness. The Moon moves between the Earth and the sun.
Full Moon When the Earth is located between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon appears to be fully lit.
Geocentric Model The model in which Earth was the center of the universe with all the planets and stars circling it.
Heliocentric Model The model in which the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun.
Inertia and Gravity The two forces that keep Earth in orbit around the sun, and the Moon in orbit around the Earth.
