adrenal cortex secretes steroid hormones
adrenal medulla secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine
steroid hormones regulate carbohydrate metabolism and salt and water balance
ovaries -one on each side of the uterus -secretes estrogen and progesterone
estrogen responsible for development of female secondary sex characteristics and regulation of reproduction
progesterone regulates uterine conditions during pregnancy
pancreas -located behind the stomach -secretes insulin and glucagon
pancreas= islets of langerhans
parathyroid glands -located on the posterior aspect of the thyroid gland in the neck -secretes PTH
pineal gland -located in the center of the brain -secretes melatonin and serotonin
what are the two parts of the pituitary gland? anterior (adenohypophysis) and posterior (neurohypophysis)
anterior pituitary gland -located at the base of the brain -secretes TSH, FSH, LH, GH, ACTH, melanocyte stimulating hormone, and prolactin
posterior pituitary gland releases ADH and oxytocin
testes -located one on each side within the scrotum in the male -secretes testosterone
thymus gland -located in the mediastinal cavity anterior to and above the heart -secretes thymosin
thyroid gland -located in the front of neck -secretes triiodothyronine, thyroxine, calcitonin
