Complete blood count (CBC) A common laboratory blood test performed as a screening of general health or for diagnostic purposes
Lymphadenopathy Enlarged (diseased) lymph nodes
Splen/o Combining form meaning spleen
White Blood Count (WBC) A count of the number of white blood cells in a given volume of blood obtained via manual or automated laboratory methods
Bone Marrow Transplant Transplantation of healthy bone marrow from a compatible donor to a diseased recipient to stimulate blood cell production
CMP Abbreviation meaning Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
BUN Abbreviation meaning Blood urea nitrogen
Lymphadenotomy Incision into a lymph node
MCHC Abbreviation for mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration
AST Abbreviation for aspartate aminotransferase (enzyme)
Leukemia Chronic or acute malignant (cancerous) disease of the blood forming organs characterized by abnormal leukocytes in the blood and bone marrow
RRR Abbreviation meaning Relative risk reduction; regular rate and rhythm
Red blood count (RBC) A count of the number of red blood cells in a given volume of blood obtained via manual or automated laboratory methods
Phag/o Combining form meaning eat or swallow
Lacteals Specialized lymph vessels in the small intestine that absorb fat into the bloodstream
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) A timed test that measures the rate at which red blood cells settle they were volume of plasma
Leukocyte Protects the body from harmful invading substances (also called white blood cells)
Lymph ducts Collecting channels that carry lymph from the lymph nodes to the veins
Chyl/o Combining form meaning juice
Homologous blood Blood voluntarily donated by any person for transfusion to a compatible recipient
Positron emission tomography (PET) Scanning technique combining nuclear medicine and computed tomography to produce images of anatomy and metabolic function within the body
Antigen A substance that when introduced into the body causes the formation of antibodies against it
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) Calculation of the volume of individual red blood cells using HCT and RBC results (MCV=HCT/RBC)
NK Abbreviation for Natural killer (cell)
Lymphangiogram An x-ray image of a lymph node or lymph vessel obtained after injection of a contrast dye
Right lymph duct Receives lymph from the right upper part of the body
HIV Abbreviation for human immunodeficiency virus
Hemochromatosis Hereditary disorder with an excessive buildup of iron deposits in the body
Anticoagulant A drug that prevents clotting of the blood
Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) Test to determine coagulation defects such as platelet disorders
