SA abbreviation for sinoatrial
cardiac catheterization Introduction of a flexible, narrow tube (or catheter) through a vein or artery into the heart
sphygm/o combining form meaning pulse
aort/o combining form meaning aorta
saccular aneurysm a sac-like bulge on one side of an artery
hypertension (HTN) persistently high blood pressure
VSD ventricular septal defect
sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) the abrupt cessation of any cardiac output (CO), most commonly as the result of ventricular fibrillation
Stroke Volume (SV) measurement of the amount of blood ejected from a ventricle in one contraction
mitral valve prolapse (MVP) protrusion of one or both cusps of the mitral valve back into the left atrium during ventricular contraction
diuretic drug that increases the secretion of urine
steth/o combining form meaning chest
constriction compression of a part that causes narrowing (stenosis)
vascul/o combining form meaning vessel
infarct a localized area of necrosis caused by ischemia resulting from occlusion of a blood vessel
echocardiography (ECHO) recording of sound waves through the heart to evaluate structure and motion
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors drug that suppresses the conversion of angiotensin in the blood by the angiotensin-covering
BP abbreviation for blood pressure
angiography process of x-ray imaging a blood vessel after injection of contrast dye, most commonly after catheter placement
diaphoresis profuse sweating (perspiration)
AV abbreviation for atrioventricular
stethoscope instrument used to listen for sounds in the body
bradycardia slow heart rate (less than 60 beats/minute)
cardioversion restoration of a fast of irregular heart rate to a normal rhythm
sinoatrial (SA) node the pacemaker; highly specialized, neurological tissue embedded in the wall of the right atrium
EKG abbreviation for electrocardiogram
NSR abbreviation for normal sinus rhythm
valvuloplasty surgical repair of a heart valve
RCA abbreviation for right coronary artery
claudication limping; pain in a limb (especially the calf) while walking that subsides after rest
