Plant Gas Exchange

TermDefinition
photosynthesis conversion of light energy from the sun into chemical energy.
photosynthesis equation 6CO2 + 6H2O --> light energy --> C6H12O6 + 6O2
respiration the process by which cells break down simple food molecules to release the energy they contain.
aerobic respiration equation glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
chloroplast site of photosynthesis
autotroph an organism that makes its own food
mitochondria powerhouse of the cell
stomata small openings on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen and carbon dioxide can move
guard cells control the opening and closing of stomata
diffusion movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
lower epidermis contains guard cells and stomata
spongy mesophyll loose tissue beneath the palisade layer of a leaf; has many air spaces between its cells
palisade mesophyll layer of cells under the upper epidermis of a leaf
upper mesophyll cells aligned vertically and tightly packed for maximum absorption of sunlight. Main location of photosynthesis
cuticle a waxy covering on the surface of stems and leaves that acts as an adaptation to prevent desiccation in terrestrial plants.
xylem vessels transports water and minerals through the plant, from roots to leaves. Also supports the plants
phloem tubes long tubes made up of living cells with perforated end walls, which transport sucrose and other substances in plants

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
