Camelid Diseases
Term | Definition |

Most Frequent Illnesses | -internal parasites, clostridial infections, breeding issues. heat stress, hepatic lipidosis. |
Less Frequent Illnesses | -respiratory issues, enteritis and colic, nutritional issues, external parasites. |
Illness Signs | signs of illness are often undetectable in camelids, owners will know if their animal is acting different. |
Heat Stress (CS + factors) | CS: temp over 102*F, drooping lower lip, scrotal/perineal swelling or edema, abortion/impaired reproduction, recumbency. Pre-disposing factors: excessive exercising during hot times, obesity, nutritional imbalances, poorly groomed coat, un-sheared coat. |
Heat Stress (Tx) | Tx: cool animal w/ water, cold IV or orogastric fluids, alchohol rubs (concentrate on limbs), place in front of fan/AC if mild, move to shade. |
Dystocia | illness cause by improper fetus positioning, wrong cervix dilation, first birth, low oxytocin, pelvic injury, poor nutrition. Treated by a vet performing a vaginal exam and manipulate the fetus into correct position, otherwise a C-section can be done. |
