Chapter 2: Integumentary System

1. primary lesions lesions arising from previously normal skin
2. macule or macula a flat, discolored spot on the skin up to 1 cm across Example: freckles
3. Patch a flat, discolored area on the skin larger than 1 cm Example: vitiligo
4. Papule a solid mass on the skin up to 0.5 cm in diameter Example: a nevus
5. plaque a solid mass greater than 1 cm in diameter and limited to the surface of the skin
6. nodule a solid mass greater than 1 cm that extends deeper into the epidermis
7. tumor a solid mass larger than 1-2 cm
8. wheal an area of localized skin edema (swelling) Example: a hive
9. vesicle little bladder; an elevated, fluid-filled sac (blister) within or under the epidermis up to 0.5 cm in diameter Example: a fever blister
10. bulla a blister larger than 0.5 cm Example: second-degree burn
11. secondary lesions lesions that result in changed=s to primary lesions
12. erosion gnawed away; loss of superficial epidermis, leaving an area of moisture but no bleeding Example: area of moistrue
13. derm/o skin
14. xer/o dry
15. epithelium cellular avascular layer covering external and internal surfaces of the body
16. epidermis outer layer of the skin
17. melanin dark brown to black pigment contained in melanocytes
18. cherry angioma a small, round, bright red blood vessel tumor on the skin, seen mostly in people over 30
19. telangiectasia a tiny, red blood vessel lesion formed by dilation of a group of blood vessels radiating from a central arteriole, most commonly on the face, neck, or chest; also called spider angioma
20. ecchymosis bruise; a black and blue mark; a large purpura
21. cicatrix of the skin a mark left by the healing of a sore or wound, showing the replacement of destroyed tissue by fibrous tissue
22. keloid an abnormal overgrowth of scar tissue that is thick and irregular
23. neoplasm abnormal tissue that grows by more rapid than normal cellular proliferation
24. dyplastic nevus a mole with precancerous changes
25. abscess A localized collection of pus in a cavity formed by inflamed surrounding tissues, which heals when drained
26. melanoma malignant neoplasm composed of melanocytes
27. onychia inflammation of the fingernail or toenail
28. paronychia inflammation of the nail fold
29. seborrhea a skin condition marked by the hypersecretion of sebum from sebaceous glands
30. tinea a group of fungal skin diseases identified by the body part affected.
