Scientific Method

6.1 Scientific Method

TermDefinition
Scientific Method A series of steps used to investigate an occurrence.
Question/Problem Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.
Observation Make observations and research your topic of interest. Uses the five senses.
Hypothesis Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. In the form of "If...then...".
Experiment Develop and follow a procedure. A procedure is a set way of doing something. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable.
Analyze Results Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs.
Conclusion Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.
Dependent Variable A variable that changes in response to the change in another variable.
Independent Variable Variable that the experimenter changes.
Variables Factors in an experiment that can change.
Inference Drawing a conclusion based on evidence.
Prediction Forecast about what may happen
Constant Part of the experiment the stays the same for comparison.

Quantitative Data with number
