6.1 Scientific Method
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Scientific Method | A series of steps used to investigate an occurrence. |
Question/Problem | Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation. |
Observation | Make observations and research your topic of interest. Uses the five senses. |
Hypothesis | Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. In the form of "If...then...". |
Experiment | Develop and follow a procedure. A procedure is a set way of doing something. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable. |
Analyze Results | Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs. |
Conclusion | Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure. |
Dependent Variable | A variable that changes in response to the change in another variable. |
Independent Variable | Variable that the experimenter changes. |
Variables | Factors in an experiment that can change. |
Inference | Drawing a conclusion based on evidence. |
Prediction | Forecast about what may happen |
Constant | Part of the experiment the stays the same for comparison. |
Qualitative | Description using words |
Quantitative | Data with number |
