essential nutrients nutrients necessary for normal body functioning that must be obtained from food
macronutrients A chemical substance that an organism must obtain in relatively large amounts; carbs, proteins, fats
micronutrients vitamins and minerals that are essential to the body in small amounts
kilocalorie a unit of energy equal to 1,000 calories
metric system The decimal measuring system based on the meter, liter, and gram as units of length, capacity, and weight or mass.
