cells and their function | cells are the basics of all living things. thay are the the smallest living parts of plants and animals. |
the parts of cells | parts are Mitochondria, Cytoplasm, Ribosomes, vacuole, and nucleus |
mitochondria | changes the chemical energy of food into a form that the cell can use |
cytoplasm | a fluid that contains the cell's part |
ribosomes | begin the process of making proteins |
vacuole | is surrounded by a membrane and contains fluid |
nucleus | directs the cell's activities |
plant cells | plant cells have all of the parts shown in the animal cell. They also have cell walls and choroplasts. |
chloroplast with chlorophyll | Chloroplast contain chlorophyll. Plants make food when sunlight strikes chlorophyll (photosynthesis) |
cell wall of plants | a rigid cell wall lies outside the cell membrane. The cell wall gives plants cells a uniform square shape and give the cell support. |
the size and shape of cells | the size can't be too big or too small. It can't be to big because oxygen can't travel through the whole cell. the cell has a special shape that fits the job the cells do |
cells form tissues | cells usually don't work alone they often work together in tissues |
tissue | A group of the same type of cells that work together to do the same job. |
tissues form organs | Your heart, eyes, ears, and stomach are all organs. Each is made up of multiple types of tissues working together. |
organ | a group of different tissues that join together into one structure for a specific function. |
organ system | a group of organs that work together to carry out a life process. Examples would be respiratory, circulatory, disgestive, urinaty systems. |
receiving food and oxygen | every cell needs a supply of food and oxygen and a way to get rid of waste (Carbon dioxide & waste). |
the transport of nutrients and wastes | in many animals, blood transports nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body. |
stems and leaves | leaves are attached to stems and many stems hold leaves |
vascular system | many plants use a system of tubes to transport materials such as water, minerals, and sugar. These tubes are the xylem and phloem. |
xylem | carry materials from the plants roots to its leaves. It carries water and minerals to the entire plant. |
phloem | tubes that carry sugar away from the leaves to the rest of the plant. The sugar is dissolved in water so it can be transported. In Trees the phloem is just below the bark. |
root types | Fibrous Roots and Tap Roots |

functions of roots | Anchor plant so it doesn't fall or get pulled up. Absorb water and minerals from the soil. |
photosynthesis | How green plants make food (Producers)Carbon dioxide + water + sun light --> Sugar + Oxygen Only plants can do this, they make there own food. Animals have to eat food to get energy. |
chlorophyll | a green substance that traps energy from the sun and allows plants to make their own food. This what does photosynthesis in plants. |
chloroplasts | Structure in a plant cell that contains Chlorophyll. This is where Photosynthesis takes place in green leaves. |
energy from food | Plants make extra sugar to be stored for later when cells need energy. It is stored as various sugars and starches. The energy is released by cellular respiration. |
cellular respiration | the process by which cells break down sugar to release energy. Sugar+oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water + energy......This happens in the mitochondria of both plants and animals. |
carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle | Animals breath in oxygen from the air and breath out Carbon Dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide through the leaves and release oxygen. Carbon dioxide+water+light-->sugar+oxygen......sugar+oxygen-->carbon dioxide+water+engery see how they balance? |
