What is DIPPS? | dignity, independance, individualized care, preferences, privacy and safety |
What makes up informed consent? | reason for treatment or service, what will be done, how it will be done, who will do it, expected outcome, potential risk and side effects of treatment, other treatment options. |
Interdependance | dependance of two or more people or things on one another. |
Dependance | reliance on others for care or support |

stigma | characteristics that make a person flawed or different, it is a mark of disgrace based on circumstance. |
Discrimination | unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things based on age, race and gender etc. |

Competence | ability to do something competently and efficiently within scope of practice. |
Compassion | sympathetic pity and concern for suffering and misfortune of others |
Empathy | ability to understand and share feelings of another and have a desire to help. |
Sympathy | to percieve the emotions of another, feelings of sorrow and pity for another misfortune, |
Advance Care Directive | Not legally enforceable, it is a document that allows clients to convey their own end of life care, made in front of nurses and Dr. |

Autonomy | patients have the right to participate in assessing and planning their care and treatment. Personal choice is important for quality of life, dignity and self respect. It is also considered freedom of choice. |
Battery | Actual touching of a persons body without consent. Consent can be withdrawn at anytime. |
Civil Law | concerned with relationship between people |
Criminal Law | concerned with criminal offences against people and society in general. |
False Imprisonment | unlawful restraint or restriction of a persons freedom or movement, (threat or physical) |
Living will | a document that allows clients to convey their wishes to accept or refuse medical care to sustain their life. Not legally enforceable. |
Negligence | Acted in a way that caused harm, is often not intentional. May have to pay damages to injured person. |
Malpractice | improper, illegal or negligent professional activity or treatment by medical, legal or public practitioner. |
Confidentiality | the state of keeping or being kept secret or private. |
Liable | responsible by law, legally answerable |
