Brain A&P Review

Frontal Lobe (front of the brain): motor skills, personality, speech/language, memory
Primary Motor Area Sequence (precentral gyrus): conscious control of movement and skeletal muscles
Parietal Lobe (above the temporal lobe and between frontal and occipital): sensations
Primary Sensory Area Sequence (post central gyrus): sensation
Occipital Lobe (back of the brain): vision and memory
Temporal Lobe (in front of the occipital): processes auditory information, emotions, and memory
Broca's Area (precentral gyrus, left side): speaking ability, damage = know words but unable to speak
Corpus Collosum (between left and right hemispheres): connects left and right hemispheres of the brain
Diencephalon (interbrain) (underneath the cerebrum): primary relay and processing
Thalamus (near center): relays info between brain stem and cerebral cortex
Hypothalamus (below thalamus): emotions, autonomic functions, "fight or flight", body temp, water balance, metabolism
Pituitary Gland (below hypothalamus): master gland that controls sexual maturation, development, sex hormones, birth, stimulates thyroid
Choroid Plexus (above thalamus): forms cerebro-spinal fluid
Midbrain (above pons): motor functions (cerebellum, basal ganglia, cerebral cortex)
Pineal Gland (posterior or epithalamus? - bruh I can't read my handwriting and I'm too lazy to check): controls day/night cycle through melatonin
Medulla Oblongata (below pons): controls autonomic functions (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.), cranial nerves
Reticular Activating System (in medulla): plays role in consciousness and awake/sleep cycle (damage = coma)
Pons (above medulla): relay center of cranial nerves (mouth, ears), controls respiratory rhythm (somatic and visceral control)
Cerebellum (posterior to stem, inferior to occipital): coordination of movements, posture
