Brain A&P Review
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Frontal Lobe | (front of the brain): motor skills, personality, speech/language, memory |
Primary Motor Area Sequence | (precentral gyrus): conscious control of movement and skeletal muscles |
Parietal Lobe | (above the temporal lobe and between frontal and occipital): sensations |
Primary Sensory Area Sequence | (post central gyrus): sensation |
Occipital Lobe | (back of the brain): vision and memory |
Temporal Lobe | (in front of the occipital): processes auditory information, emotions, and memory |
Broca's Area | (precentral gyrus, left side): speaking ability, damage = know words but unable to speak |
Corpus Collosum | (between left and right hemispheres): connects left and right hemispheres of the brain |
Diencephalon (interbrain) | (underneath the cerebrum): primary relay and processing |
Thalamus | (near center): relays info between brain stem and cerebral cortex |
Hypothalamus | (below thalamus): emotions, autonomic functions, "fight or flight", body temp, water balance, metabolism |
Pituitary Gland | (below hypothalamus): master gland that controls sexual maturation, development, sex hormones, birth, stimulates thyroid |
Choroid Plexus | (above thalamus): forms cerebro-spinal fluid |
Midbrain | (above pons): motor functions (cerebellum, basal ganglia, cerebral cortex) |
Pineal Gland | (posterior or epithalamus? - bruh I can't read my handwriting and I'm too lazy to check): controls day/night cycle through melatonin |
Medulla Oblongata | (below pons): controls autonomic functions (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.), cranial nerves |
Reticular Activating System | (in medulla): plays role in consciousness and awake/sleep cycle (damage = coma) |
Pons | (above medulla): relay center of cranial nerves (mouth, ears), controls respiratory rhythm (somatic and visceral control) |
Cerebellum | (posterior to stem, inferior to occipital): coordination of movements, posture |
