TermDefinition
cell the smallest building block of life that can carry out its own life processes
organism a living thing
unicellular An organism that is made up of one cell.
multicellular An organism made up of more than one cell.
organelles small structures in cells that carry out functions to keep the cell alive.
cytoplasm It is a gel-like substance that cushions the organelles inside the cell. It is between the nucleus and the cell membrane.
cell membrane It protects the cell from and controls the materials that move in and out of the cell.
nucleus Controls many functions of the cell
vacuole stores food, water, and waste
mitochondria Tiny power plants in the cell where food is broken down and provides energy
chloroplast A green structure that uses energy from the sun to make food for the plant. Only in plant cells.
cell wall A rigid structure that strengthens and adds an extra layer of protection. Only in plant cells.
animal cell sphere-like in shape pinkish red small vacuoles
plant cell boxy shape green 1 large vacuole 2 extra organelles (cell wall and chloroplasts)
