What divides the body into equal left and right halves? Midsagittal plane
What divides the body into superior(upper) and inferior(lower) portions? Transverse plane
What divides the body into unequal left and right halves? Sagittal plane
Which plane divides the body into anterior(front) and posterior(back)? Frontal plane
A flat crosswise plane,such as the horizon. Horizontal plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior(upper) and inferior(lower) portions Transverse plane
What is the front or belly side, of the organ or body? Ventral
This refers to the back of the organ or body. Dorsal
What means situated in the front? Anterior
What means situated in the back? Posterior
What means upper most, above, or toward the head? Superior
What means lowermost, below, or towards the feet? Inferior
This means towards the head. Cephalic
This means towards the lower part of the body. Caudal
What means situated nearest the midline or beginning of a body structure? Proximal
What means situated farthest from the midline or beginning of a body structure? Distal
This means the direction toward, or nearer, the midline. Medial
What means the direction toward, or nearer, the side of the body, away from the midline? Lateral
What are the two major body cavities? The dorsal and the ventral cavities
What cavity is located within the skull, surrounds and protects the brain? The cranial cavity
Which cavity is located within the spinal column, surrounds and protects the spinal cord? The spinal cavity
Which cavity is located along the front of the body, contains the body organs that sustain homeostasis? The ventral cavity
What is homeostasis? The processes through which the body maintains a constant internal environment
Which cavity surrounds and protects the heart and lungs? The thoracic cavity
Which cavity contains primarily the major organs of digestion? The abdominal cavity
What is the space formed by the hip bones and contains primarily the organs of the reproductive and excretory systems? The pelvic cavity
What term refers to the pelvic cavity and the abdominal cavity as one unit? The abdominopelvic cavity
What means relating to the groin, refers to the entire lower area of the abdomen? Inguinal
What regions are covered by the lower ribs? The right and left hypochondriac regions
Hypochondriac means what? Below the ribs
What region is located above the stomach? The epigastric region
Which regions are located near the inward curve of the spine? The right and left lumbar regions
What region surrounds the umbilicus? The umbilical region
What regions are located over the hip bones? The right and left iliac regions
What region is located below the stomach? The hypogastric region
