where does mucus come from? mucous membranes
how does most air gets to your lungs? your nose
another name for larynx voice box
how many lobes in right lung? 3
how many lobes in left lung? 2
when you exhale, how much air stays in your lungs? 70-80%
what kind of safeguards are in place to keep bad things out of our lungs? hair, mucus, cilia
what do nasal conchae do? cleans, moisten and warms the air that passes through nasal cavity
name the parts of the pharynx nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx
what effects does smoking have on our bodies? destroys cilia, breaks down alveoli, increase blood pressure, inflamed vocal cords, shrinks lungs, causes many cancers
explain what is happening to the gases in our alveoli. Oxygen rich blood is exchanged for oxygen poor blood in blood cells lining alveolus. Oxygen is “traded” for CO₂, which then travels back up into lungs for exhalation.
how does our diaphragm help us breathe? inhale, it contracts (flattens, pulls down) exhale, it relaxes (gets longer, forces air out)
