Unit 8 Gas Laws
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Avogadro's Law | at constant temperature and pressure, the number of atoms or molecules in any gases is always the same for equal volumes, or always proportional to the volumes |
Ideal Gas Law | mathematical formula that describes the relationships among temperature, pressure, volume, and moles in ideal gases |
Dalton's Law of Partial Pressue | the total pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the individual pressures of the gases in the mixture |
Charle's Law | at constant pressure, the temperature and volume of a gas are directly proportional |
Boyle's Law | at constant temperature, the product of the volume and pressure of a gas is constant |
Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP) | nominal conditions of 0 degrees Celsius and 1 atmosphere (atm) of pressure in the atmosphere at sea level used because temperature and air pressure vary from one place to another |
Kinetic Molecular Theory | explains the states of matter, and is based on the idea that matter is composed of tiny particles that are always in motion to explain observable properties and behaviors of solids, liquids, and gases |
Pressure | the force exerted per unit area; it can be measured using a barometer or manometer. Units - mm Hg, kPa, atm, torr |
Temperature (Kelvin) | the average kinetic energy of all the atoms or molecules of that substance; the Standard International ( SI ) unit of thermodynamic energy |
Volume | How much space an object or substance takes up. • Measured in cubic meters (m3), liters (L) & milliliters (mL) |
Molar Volume | the volume of one mole of a substance at a specified pressure and temperature |
