Term | Definition |
---|---|
Precursor | a substance, cell, or cellular component from which another substance, cell, or cellular component is formed. |
Mitigate | reducing climate change – involves reducing the flow of heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere |
Serverty | intensity or sharpness, as of cold or pain. grievousness; hard or trying character or effect |
Saffir | system that classifies hurricane strength, from Category 1 (weakest) to Category 5 (strongest). storm surge. |
Cone of uncertainty | a graphic depiction of the increasing accuracy that is possible for estimates as the details of a project become more known over time. |
Magnitude | “distance or quantity.” It depicts the absolute or relative direction or size in which an object moves in the sense of motion. It is used to express the size or scope of something. |
Storm surge | an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tides. Storm surge should not be confused with storm tide, which is defined as the water level rise due to the combination of storm surge and the astronomical tide. |
Tectonic plate boundary | A tectonic plate boundary is the border between two plates. The tectonic plates slowly and constantly move but in many different directions. Some are moving toward each other, some are moving apart, and some are grinding past each other. |
Convergent boundary | When two plates come together, it is known as a convergent boundary. The impact of the colliding plates can cause the edges of one or both plates to buckle up into a mountain ranges or one of the plates may bend down into a deep seafloor trench. |
Divergent boundary | occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. Along these boundaries, earthquakes are common and magma (molten rock) rises from the Earth's mantle to the surface, solidifying to create new oceanic crust. |
Transform boundary | places where plates slide sideways past each other. At transform boundaries lithosphere is neither created nor destroyed. Many transform boundaries are found on the sea floor, where they connect segments of diverging mid-ocean ridges. |
Seismometer | the internal part of the seismograph, which may be a pendulum or a mass mounted on a spring; however, it is often used synonymously with "seismograph". Seismographs are instruments used to record the motion of the ground during an earthquake. |
Monitoring | the observation of a disease, condition or one or several medical parameters over time. Baby monitoring. Biomonitoring, of toxic chemical compounds, elements, or their metabolites, in biological substances. |
Risk | the potential for harm. It is a prediction of a probable outcome based on evidence from previous experience. The nature of risk and harm can vary in daily life, creating different dimensions of risk that are subject to the factors at play in the study. |
Natural Hazard forecast | any natural event that poses a risk to humans or the environment. Some natural hazards, such as severe weather events, can be predicted using data and technology. Other hazards, such as earthquakes, are not yet predictable. |
