hygiene practices that keep bodies clean and healthy.
grooming practices to care for oneself, such as caring for fingernails and hair.
activities of daily living (ADLs) personal daily care tasks, such as bathing, dressing, caring for teeth and nails, eating, drinking, walking, transferring, and elimination.
perineal care care of the genital and anal area.
pressure points areas of the body that bear much of the body weight.
bony prominences areas of the body where the bone lies close to the skin.
pressure injuries injuries or wounds that result from skin deterioration and shearing; also called pressure ulcers, pressure sores, bed sores, or decubitus ulcers.
foot drop a weakness of muscles in the feet and ankles that causes difficulty with the ability to flex the ankles and walk normally.
orthotic device a device that helps support and align a limb and improve its functioning; also called orthosis.
orthosis a device that helps support and align a limb and improve its functioning; also called orthotic device.
partial bath a bath given on days when a complete bed bath, tub bath, or shower is not done; includes washing the face, hands, underarms, and perineum.
axillae underarms.
perineum the genital and anal area.
additive a substance added to another substance that changes its effect.
groin the area from the pubis (area around the penis and scrotum) to the upper thighs.
shower chair a sturdy chair designed to be placed in a bathtub or shower to help a person who is weak be able to bathe in the tub or shower, rather than in bed.
safety razor a type of razor that has a sharp blade with a special safety casing to help prevent cuts; requires the use of shaving cream or soap.
disposable razor a type of razor that is discarded in a biohazard container after one use; requires the use of shaving cream or soap.
electric razor a type of razor that runs on electricity; does not require the use of soap or shaving cream.
pediculosis an infestation of lice.
dandruff an excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp.
affected side a weakened side of the body due to a stroke or injury; also called involved side.
involved side a weakened side of the body due to a stroke or injury; also called affected side.
oral care care of the mouth, teeth, and gums.
dental floss a special kind of string used to clean between teeth.
halitosis bad breath.
dentulous having no teeth.
aspiration the inhalation of food, drink, or foreign material into the lungs.
dentures artificial teeth.
