ECE unit 2 vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Cephalocaudal Babies develop from head to toe. They are born Top heavy with a more developed head than lower body.
Proximodistal Babied develop from the center out. Starting at the core working its way the arms then hands then finger.
Differentiation Simple to complex, which is how babies develop
Development is similar for everyone No matter what we all go through the same steps in a similar order/way. Ex.) Babies lift there head before they lift their body and stand before walking
Development builds on earlier learning We learn from simple to complex in a sequential, orderly predictable manner. Ex.) We first know our ABC's before we can read words and sounds, before we can speak a language
Development Proceeds at an individual rate We all learn at different speeds. Ex.) Some babies start walking at 9 months and others at 18 months.
Development is interrelated Many developmental changes take place (PIE'S) all at once. Because PIE's are working together, the outcome is more complete.
Development is continues throughout life. Development begins at birth and countines until death. We never stop learning. But there are critical windows for optimal growth and development
Early childhood covers the period in the human life cycle from conception to eight years
Prenatal Conception to Birth
Infant Birth to 1 year
Toddler 1 year to 3 years
preschool 3 years to 5 years
School age 5 years to 8 years
Physical Physical body changes in a growing individual
Intellectual Growth in the mental process to gain knowledge
Emotional How children ;earn to deal with their emotions. How they work through personal issues and problems. How they express their feelings
Social How children learn to interact with others.
Moral How a child develops the standards of behavior considered acceptable by society
