Nutrition & Fluid Balance
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Nutrition | The process by which the body uses food to maintain health |
Malnutrition | Lack of proper nutrition that results from insufficient food intake or an improper diet |
Dysphagia | Difficulty swallowing |
Fasting | Is a practice during which food is voluntarily given up for a period of time |
Vegetarians | Do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. May or may not eat eggs and dairy products |
Vegans | Are vegetarians who do not eat any animals or animal products, including milk, cheese, other dairy items, or eggs |
Nutrient | Necessary substance that provides energy, promotes growth and health, and helps regulate metabolism |
Metabolism | Process of breaking down and transforming all nutrients that enter the body in order to provide energy and growth |
Diet Cards | List the resident's name and information about special diets, allergies, likes and dislikes, and other dietary instructions |
Special Diets | Often ordered for residents who have certain illnesses or conditions |
Puree | Blend or grind food into a thick paste |
Lactose Intolerance | Inability of the body to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and other dairy products |
Diuretics | Substances that increase urine formation and cause the body to excrete sodium, potassium, and water through the kidneys |
Glucose | Natural sugar |
Apathy | Lack of interest |
Intake/Input | Fluid a person consumes |
Output | The fluid that is eliminated from the body each day |
Fluid Balance | A person maintains equal intake and output, or consumes and eliminates equal amounts of fluid |
Graduates | Containers that measure fluid in milliliters and may also measure in ounces |
Fluid Overload | Condition that occurs when more fluid enters the body than is eliminated from the body |
Restrict Fluids (RF) | The person is allowed to drink, but must limit the daily amount to a level set by the doctor |
