TermDefinition
sagittal plane vertical planes from top to bottom and divides the body into an UNEQUAL left and right side
midsagittal vertical plane that divides the body into equal left and right sides aka the midline
frontal vertical plane that divides the body into front and back sides aka the coronal plane
transverse horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower parts aka the horizontal plane
ventral front, belly side
dorsal back
anterior toward front from the side
posterior toward back from the side
superior above, towards the head
inferior below, towards the feet
cephalic toward head
caudal towards lower part of the body
proximal towards the origin (beginning) of limb
distal further from the origin (beginning) of limb
medial toward midline
lateral toward side, away from midline
dorsal cavitiy along back of head and body, contains all the organs of the nervous system
cranial cavity located within the skull, surrounding and protecting the brain
spinal cavity located along the spinal column, sourrounding and protecting the spinal cord
ventral cavity located along the front of the body, containing the organs needed for homeostasis
thoracic cavity (chest/throax) surrounds and protects the heart and lungs
abdominal cavity contains the digestive organs
pelvic cavity contains the organs for reproduction and excretion
hypochondriac (right and left) below ribs
epigastric above the stomach
lumbar (right and left) front of lower back
umbilical surround umbilicus
lilac located over hip bones
hypogastric below stomach
RUQ right upper quarter
LUQ left upper quarter
RLQ right lower quarter
LLQ left lower quarter
