Key Stage 3 Science

QuestionAnswer
7K What is a contact force? Give 3 examples Two objects exerting forces on each other when touching. Examples normal contact force, friction and upthrust
What is a non contact force? Give 3 examples Two objects exerting forces on each other when not touching. Examples gravity, magnetism, electrostatic
What is weight due to? What units do we measure it in? What instruments do we use to measure it. Weight is a force due to the pull of gravity between objects with mass. Measured in Newtons. A newtonmeter
What is mass? What unit is mass measured in? What instrument is used to measure it Mass is the amount of matter in a material. Measured in kilograms. Measure using a balance
What is an elastic material? Give 2 examples of elastic materials Elastic materials return to their original shape when the stretching force is removed. Examples rubber, springs, sponge
What is a plastic material? Give 2 examples of plastic materials Plastic materials do not return to their original shape when the stretching force is removed. Examples plasticine , clay
When does friction occur? Give 2 situations when it is useful Friction occurs when one object is moving against another. Useful tyres moving along a the road, pencil moving against paper
How could the force of friction be increased? Give an examples of where it would useful to do this? How could we reduce the force of friction? Give an example of where this could be useful Make the surfaces rougher E.g. flooring to avoid slipping Make the surfaces smoother e.g. bowling alley
What is pressure? What is the symbol for pressure? How can pressure be increased? How can it be decreased? Pressure is the force per unit area. Symbol P. It can be increased by increasing the force and decreasing the area. It can be decreased by reducing the force and increasing the area
Explain why camels have big feet for walking in the desert? Explain why skis are so long? Explain why tanks use caterpillar tracks? The camels weight is spread over a large area so they do not sink in the sand. The humans weight is spread over a bigger area so they do not sink in the snow. The tanks weight is spread over a larger area so they do not sink in mud/sand
What happens to an object if the forces on it are balanced? Give an example of a situation of where forces are balanced? The object will either remain stationary or move with a constant speed in the same direction. E,g a car moving at 30mph along a straight road
What happens to an object if the forces are not balanced? Give an example of a situation of where the forces are unbalanced The object will either accelerate/ decelerate, change direction or shape. E.g. a car starting to move

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
