Safety and Body Mechanics
Term | Definition |

Scalds | Burns caused by hot liquids such as coffee or hot water |
Hoarding | Collecting and putting things away in a guarded way |
Dysphagia | Difficulty swallowing |
Aspiration | Inhaling food, fluid, or foreign material into the lungs |
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) | Sheet that provides information on the safe use and hazards of chemicals, as well as emergency steps to take in the event chemicals are splashed, sprayed, or ingested |
Body Mechanics | The way the arts of the body work together when a person moves |
Restraint | Physical or chemical way to restrict voluntary movement or behavior |
Physical Restraint | Any method, device, material, or equipment that restricts a person's freedom of movement |
Chemical Restraints | Medications used to control a person's mood or behavior |
Suffocation | The stoppage of breathing from a lack of oxygen or excess of carbon dioxide in the body which can result in unconsciousness or death |
Restraint-free Care | Restraints are not kept or used for any reason |
Restraint Alternatives | Measures used in place of restraint that reduce the need for a restraint |
Cyanosis | Blue-tinted, gray, or pale skin which cold mean lack of oxygen in the blood. |
Combustion | The process of burning |
Flammable | Easily ignited and capable of burning quickly |
Intravenous Therapy | IV therapy is the delivery of medication, nutrition, or fluids through a person's vein |
RACE | Outlines what to do in case of a fire. Rescue-Activate-Contain-Extinguish |
Atrophy | Weakening or wasting away of muscles |
PASS | Fire extinguisher; Pull-Aim-Squeeze-Sweep |
Contracture | Permanent and painful shortening of a muscle, tendon, or ligament that restrict movement |
