Routes of Transmission -direct contact (BBP) -indirect contact (needlesticks) -air-borne (sneezing) -food-borne (contaminated food) -vector-borne (fleas, insects and animals)
Steps of Exposure -transfer care to partner -let it bleed -clean exposed area with soap and water -activate infection control plan -rinse eyes if exposed -exposure report
Standard Precautions -personal protective equipment -wash hands -change gloves -eye protection -mask
Personal Protection from Aireborne and Bloodborne Pathogens -gloves~ touching blood and bodily fluids -gowns~ a lot of bleeding or giving birth -mask, eye protection, face shield~ prevents blood splatter from getting in eyes
Handwashing Wash before hand before and after Pt -rinse your hands using warm water -add soap and scrub for 20 sec -dry with paper towel and use it to turn sink off and open door
Immunity -Immunizations and vaccines -recovering and building immunity
Postexposure Management -determination of exposure risk -education and training -HB vaccine -PPE -cleaning and disinfecting -TB skin testing -post exposure management -compliance monitoring -record keeping
Scene Safety and Work Injury Prevention -BSI -is the scene safe -number of patients -nature of illness -additional resources -c-spine
PPE -turnout gear -gloves~ latex, rubber -helmets -boots~ steel toed -eye protection ~goggles, safety glasses, face shield -ear protection~ ear plugs -skin protection~ gown, gloves -body armor~ Kevlar
Critically Ill and Injured -know who you are -avoid unprofessional comments -treat all patients with dignity and respect -let patient parent hold child -notify family members -prepare for whats to come
Death, Dying and Grief -Death might occur sudden of after a while -emt might will sometimes face death -the grieving process ~denial ~anger, hostility ~bargaining ~depression ~acceptance
Responses to Stress -general adaptation syndrome ~alarm, react, recovery -stressful situations ~watch what you say ~bring order ~let Pt express fears and concerns ~be transparent
PTSD -reexperiencing the event and overresponding to the stimuli that recall the event -critical incident stress management helps
Emotional Aspects be calm and dont be over emotional
Stress in Situation -brief plan of action -inform the patient that you need help reassuring family -carry out plan of action -asses situation and Pt -clam and compassionate -professional judgement
Violent Situations -potentially violent situation ~civil disturbances ~large gatherings of potentially hostile people ~domestic disputes ~crime scenes
Behavioral Emergencies Emergencies that dont have clear physical cause
Workplace Issues -cultural diversity -sexual harassment- quid quo pro, hostile work environment, adversarial relationships -substance abuse
