ABA Exam 1

Chapter 3

TermDefinition
A-B design A two-phase experimental design consisting of a pre-treatment baseline condition (A) followed by a treatment condition (B)
A-B-A-B reversal design A research design consisting of a baseline and treatment phase followed by withdrawal of treatment (the second baseline) and a second implementation of the treatment
Abscissa X-axis of the graph
Alternating-treatments design (ATD) A research design in which baseline and treatment conditions (or two treatment conditions) are conducted in rapid succession and compared with each other within the same time period
Baseline The label most often given to the no-treatment phase
Changing-criterion design An experimental Design in which an initial baseline phase is followed by a series of treatment phases consisting of successive and gradually changing criteria for reinforcement or punishment
Dependent variable (DV) The target behavior
Functional relationship A relationship between a behavior and an environmental event (or events) in which the occurrence of the behavior is controlled by the occurrence of the environmental event
Graph A visual representation of the occurrence of a behavior over time
Independent variable (IV) Is what the researcher manipulates to produce a change in the target behavior
Multiple baseline across setting design A multiple baseline design in which the treatment variable is applied to the same behavior of the same subject across two or more different settings
Multiple-baseline-across-subjects design A multiple baseline design in which the treatment variable is applied to the same behavior of two or more subjects (or groups) in the same setting
Ordinate Y-axis on a graph
Research design Used to determine whether the treatment was responsible for the observed change in the target behavior and to rule out the possibility that extraneous variables caused the behavior to change
Extraneous/Confounding Variables Any event that the researcher did not plan that may have affected the behavior
Replication Duplication of earlier conditions in an experiment
Phase changing lines Vertical lines separating experimental conditions
Phase labels Descriptions of experimental conditions
Frequency plot Each data-point value is graphed separately
Cumulative record Each data point value is added to the previous value
Multiple-baseline-across-behaviors design A multiple baseline design in which the treatment variable is applied to two or more different behaviors of the same subject in the same setting

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
