nervous system
Question | Answer |
---|---|
CNS | • Brain receives processes and integrates information from the rest of the body and generates responses |
spinal cord | - intricate and delicate cable of fibres from base of brain to lower back - connects the brain to the rest of the body via its connection the the PNS made of grey (cell bodies, axon, dendrites ) & white (myelin coated axons) matter |
spinnal cord tldr | • Involved in transmission of info • Delicate structure is protected by a ring of bone called vertebrae • Spinal nerves carry messages it with the brain and pns |
PNS | Means on the edge Two functions Communicate information from bodys organs glands and muscles to the cns from both inside and outside world Communicate information from cns to body via motor neurons |
SAME | Sensory - nnucleus on side Afferent Motor Efferent |
somatic nervous system | Receive info from sites around the body (skin and muscles). sensory info is carried to the cns by sensory neurons. Motor info is carried from the cns via motor neurons Controls the skeletal muscles attached to the bone enabling voluntary movement |
autonomic nervous system | controls the activity levels of our internal organs and glands, responsible for our survival contains nerves that transmit motor messages from the brain to the bodys involuntary/smooth muscles that control the activity |
ANS continue | It also transmits messages back to the brain about the activity levels of these organs and glands Autonomic means self regulating involuntary and operate continuously and independently of the brain so that we can pay attention to other matters |
ANS subdivision | o sympathetic nervous system o Parasympathetic nervous system |
Sympathetic nervous system - arousing - fight & flight | dominates when we experience heightened emotions or during times of vigorous physical activity uses the bodys internal resources to provide extra energy, required for increased physical activity, intense emotions, stressful/threatening situations |
Parasympathetic nervous system - calming - rest & digest | opposite of sympathetic. maintains homeostasis. - it keeps our internal systems in a balanced and healthy state by maintaining vital functions such as heart rate breathing rate blood pressure and digestion at their regular level of operation. normal |
both PNS SNS | • Both the sympathetic and parasympathetic ns are automatic - you do not voluntarily control them • Both systems are always active however one usually dominated at one particular time - you are either relaxed or aroused at different times of the day |
Fight or flight responses | increased adrenaline, heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, muscle tension sweatting, goose bumps, inhibited digestion, dilaed pupils, dry mouth, release sugar from liver |
