Define Consent | Permission to render care |
Types of Consent | -expressed consent~ given verbally or shown -implied consent~ unable to give consent -involuntary consent~ if mentally unwell, protective custody, disease or substance abuse |
Minors and Consent | -minor cant give consent must be parent or school/camp -emancipated minor~ court granted adult rights |
Protocol for Restraints | -dealing with a combative patient that is at risk of harming themselves or others -contact medical control prior to restraining (must have law enforcement present) |
Patient Refusal | -notify medical control -note reason in report -needs signed refusal with witness signature -try explaining treatment again before leaving |
HIPPA | All patient information that you obtain in the course of providing care is confidential |
DNR | -if no approved document is provided upon arrival, continue care until provided or medical control gives permission -competent patient can ask for no treatment |
Signs of Death | Physical ~ unresponsive to pain stimuli ~lack of carotid pulse or heartbeat ~no breath sounds `no deep tendon or corneal reflexes ~no eye movement ~no systolic blood pressure ~profound cyanosis ~lower or decreased body temp |
Signs of Death pt. 2 | Definitive ~decapitation ~dependent lividity ~rigor mortis ~decomposition of body |
Organ Donors | Still keep them alive because the tissue needs to have oxygen to survive |
Medical Identification Insignia | Have pertinent treatment information in them and should be read throughly |
Scope of Practice | State determined care EMTB is able to provide |
Standard of Care | The manner in which you act or behave to prevent further harm to a patient |
Legal Duty to Act | Responsibility to provide equal patient care |
Legal Implications | -negligence ~ fail to provide same care as others with similar or same training would provide -abandonment ~leave patient with someone with equal or greater training -assault ~ unlawfully place a person in fear of bodily harm |
Legal Implications pt. 2 | -battery~ unlawfully touching someone -kidnapping~ seize, confine, abduct or carry a patient away against their will |
Report Requirements | Must report all abuse, drug or felony related injuries, childbirth, and crime scenes |
Ethics and Morality | -ethics~philosophy of right and wrong -morality~ code of conduct |
Role of EMT in Court | -could be witness or defendant if asked to testify -notify service director and legal counsel |
