Properties of Matter

physical properties A property of a material that can be observed, measured, or described
density A property of matter which describes how close the particles (atoms) of an object are to each other
color A property of matter that can be easily observed by looking at an object or substance
texture A property of matter that describes how the surface of an object feels
hardness A property of matter that describes how strong, durable, or flexible an object is
organize to sort or group things to find more easily
states of matter solid, liquid, and gas
solid The particles do not slide easily past each other. They vibrate, or move back and forth, in place to create a definite shape.
liquid The particles can move past each other and take the shape of their container.
gas The particles move freely past each other and spread out evenly to fill the shape of their container.
temperature the measure of how fast an object's particles are moving.
mass measures the amount of matter in a substance
volume measures the amount of space an object takes up.
weight measures the pull of gravity on an object
