Question | Answer |
---|---|
Alcohol-based hand disinfectants (AHD) | These are gels, foams, or liquids that have an alcohol content of 60% -90%. |
Asepsis | NO Disease-causing Pathogens or Micro-Organisms |
Carrier | A reservoir host who is unaware of the presence of the pathogen and spreads the disease. The Carrier has no symptoms of an infection |
Endogenous infection (inside) | a malfunction in routine body processes has caused normally beneficial or harmless microorganisms to become pathogenic. (i.e. E.Coli can be a beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract, but when it enters the bladder, causes bladder infection) |
Exogenous infection (outside) | caused by the introduction of a pathogen from outside the body. |
Engineered Safety Devices | devices specifically designed to isolate or remove the hazard (i.e. needle safety devices) |
Fomite | any inanimate reservoir of pathogenic microorganisms. Examples of fomites include drinking glasses, door-knobs, shopping cart handles, pencils, and almost any surface or object that can temporarily hold microorganisms. |
General Duty Clause | This (OSHA) clause requires an employer to maintain a workplace free from hazards that are recognized as likely to cause death or serious injury. |
Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) | Infections acquired by a patient in a healthcare facility. |
Other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) | Human body fluids, other than blood, that have the potential of containing infectious agents. i.e. semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, |
Pathogen | A microorganism capable of causing disease. |
Reservoir host | An animal, insect, or human whose body is susceptible to growth of a pathogen. |
Standard Precautions | A combination of universal precautions and Body Substance Isolation guidelines; used in hospitals for the care of all patients. Applies to blood, body fluids, nonintact skin, mucous membranes |
Susceptible Host | An individual who has little or no immunity to infection by a particular organism. |
Transmission-based Precautions | Supplement Standard Precautions-Includes 3 Categories Contact Precautions, Droplet Precautions, Airborne Precautions |
Vector | A living organism, such as an insect, that carries microorganisms from an infected person to another person. |
Work Practice Controls | Controlling workplace injuries by altering the way a task is performed. |
Sepsis (aka Septicemia) | When a life threatening infection or Pathogen has entered the bloodstream. |
Universal Precautions | means assuming that all blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) are infected with bloodborne pathogens. |
