GRAMMAR

noun person, place, thing, or idea examples: man, house, pencil, justice
proper noun a specific person, place, thing, or idea that is capitalized
pronoun takes the place of a noun examples: he, she, it, they, them, this, who
adjective describes or modifies a NOUN answers WHICH ONE? or WHAT KIND?
adverb describes or modifies a verb; may end in LY answers: WHERE? WHEN? HOW? TO WHAT EXTENT?
preposition relates a noun or pronoun to another word examples: about, above, across, after, against, into, from, of, with
conjunction joins words or groups of words examples: FANBOYS for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
interjection shows strong feeling examples: Ow! WOW!
subject Who or what the sentence is about
action verb verbs that have an object are TRANSITIVE verbs shows action examples: study, report, climb, walk, prevent
linking verb verbs that express a STATE or CONDITION express a state or condition examples: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
direct object-DO answers WHO? or WHAT? after an action verb
indirect object-IO precedes (is always BEFORE) the direct object and answers TO WHOM?
objective complement-OC modifies or describes the direct object; it may rename or describe the DO
sentence pattern with an indirect object S-AV-IO-DO
predicate noun or nominative-PN noun or pronoun (in the predicate) that refers to the same person or thing as the subject. example: New York is our largest CITY.
predicate adjective-PA word that describes the subject and follows a linking verb; it is in the predicate. example: The book is BORING.
sentence pattern with a predicate noun or predicate adjective S-LV-PA S-LV-PN
run-on sentence When a comma (instead of a period, semicolon, or a conjunction) is used between two complete sentences; a lack of punctuation
fragment lacks a subject and/or a verb example: At the edge of the grove of pine trees.
