lifting and moving patients

TermDefinition
stretcher (cot) use and backboard (long spine board) use stretcher= moving Pt by rolling 12-36in above ground LSB= immobilized hip, spine, pelvis 6-7ft long
Pt packaging consideration -orderly, planned, unhurried -practice with team -master at equipment -post evaluation (sop, equip, skills)
define body mechanics anatomical structures associated with lifts, moves and carries -shoulder to spine to pelvis to legs
injury prevention and proper lifting/moving techniques -equipment in good working order -review skills -practice -distributes weight evenly to avoid injury -power grip and lift
avoid common lifting mistakes -dont lift by leaning forward -dont lift
power grip /draw sheet Power grip -get maximum grip -palm up Draw sheet -loosen sheet under Pt or log roll onto blanket
general consideration of lifting/moving -estimate the weight of both the Pt and equipment -gauge teams limits -coordinate your movements -don’t twist body -keep weight close -don’t bend at waist -bend at knee
safe carrying on stairs Lightweight folding chair with a molded seats -adjust safety seats -fold out handles at both hands and feet
emergency moves -vehicle/scene not safe -Pt can’t be assessed without move -Explosives or hazmat on scene -Pt needs immediate intervention -Pt is access to other Pt
urgent moves -altered level of consciousness -inadequate ventilation -Pt in shock
non-urgent moves -when both scene and Pt are stable -carefully plan move -direct ground lift for Pt no Spinal injury in supine -extremity lift for Pt no suspected extremity spinal injury in supine or sitting position
geriatrics Skeletal changes- brittle bones, rigidity, spinal curvatures present -cushion back in case of kysosis and spondylitis Fear- sympathetic and compassionate
define bariatrics the management of obesity and allied diseases
lifting and moving bariatrics -improper lifting and moving of bariatrics largest cause of missed days and injury must use a bariatric stretcher -wider Pt area (mattress) -wider wheel base -might include tow package -telescoping side lift handles -increased capacity to 850-900
additional equipment examples Portable stretcher- strong rectangular tubular mainframe and fabric stretched across it Flexible stretcher- forms a rigid stretcher that conforms around Pt sides
decon/disease prevention Decontaminate equipment for safety
position vs condition -unresponsive Pt no spinal injury, hip, pelvic goes to recovery
restraints use 5 responders when needing restraints if Pt is harm to themselves or others
guidelines for restraints -LEO can put them on -once one, stay on -only physician can take them off
additional equipment examples pt2 Basket stretcher- aka stokes litter, to carry a Pt across uneven terrain Scoop stretcher- Orthopedic stretcher is designed to be split into two or four pieces
