James-Lange Theory Perceive external stimulus leads to psychological arousal and this further leads to emotion
Need Deprivation that energizes the drive to eliminate/reduce the deprivation
Acquired Immune Deficiency (Aids) Sexually transmitted disease caused by HIV which destroys the body's immune system
Asexual A person who experiences lack of sexual attraction to others or has no sexual orientation
Gender Social and cultural beliefs and expectations about what it means to be a boy/man or a girl/woman and what kinds of behaviors and roles indication masculinity/femininity
Pansexual Person whose sexual attraction doesn't depend on sex, gender or gender identity of others
Pedophilic Disorders Pedophilic disorder in which an adult or older adolescent sexually fantasizes about/engages in sexual behavior with individuals who have not reached puberty
ID Freudian structure of personality consisting of unconscious drives; individual's reservoir of sexual energy
Ego Freudian structure of personality that deals with demands of reality
Superego Freudian structure of personality that serves as the harsh internal judge of behavior; conscience
Development Pattern of continuity and change in human capabilities that occurs throughout life; growth and decline
Authoritarian Parent Restrictive, punitive style in which the parent exhorts the child to follow parent's direction
Authoritative parent Parenting style that encourages child to be independent but still places limits and controls the behavior
Estrogen Group of steroid hormones which promote development and maintenance of female characteristics of the body
Nature Person's biological inheritence, especially genes
Nurture Individual's environmental and social experiences
Puberty Period of rapid skeletal and sexual maturation that occurs mainly in early adolescence
Anorexia Nervosa Eating disorder that affects retention of new info
Emotion Feeling, affect, that can involve physiological arousal, conscious experience, and behavioral expression
Instinct Innate biological pattern of behavior that is assumed to be universal throughout a species
Humanistic Perspective Theoretical views of personality that stress a person's capacity for personal growth and positive human qualities
Individual Psychology Adler's view that people are motivated by purposes and goals and that perfection, not pleasure, is the key motivator in human life
Personality Pattern of enduring, distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that characterize the way an individual adopts to the world
Rosharch Ink Blot Test Famous projective test that uses indivdiual's perception of inkblots to determine their own personality
Subject well-being erson's assessment of their own level of positive affect relative to negative affect and an evaluation of their life in general
Oedipus Complex Freudian belief that a boy's intense desire to replace his father lies in enjoying the affection of his mother
Type A luster of characteristics: Excessively competitive, hard-driven, imatient, and hostile-related to a higher incidence of heart disease
Type B Being relaxed and easygoing; lower incidence of heart disease
Aggression Behavior intended to harm another
Conformity Change in a person's behavior to coincide more closely with a group standard
Prejudice Unjustified negative attitude toward an individual based on their membership in a group
