Female reproductive system complications
| Term | Definition |

| candidiasis | an infection of the fungus Candida; common cause of vaginitis |
| endometriosis | the growth of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus, usually in the pelvic cavity |
| leiomyoma | a benign tumor of smooth muscle, usually in the myometrium; aka fibroid |
| metorrhagia | uterine bleeding between normal menstural periods |
| pelvic inflmammatory disease (PID) | a condition caused by the spread of infection from the reproductive tract into the pelvic cavity |
| cone biopsy | the removal of a cone of tissue from the cervical lining for examination |
| dilation and curettage (D&C) | a procedure in which the cervix is dilated and the uterine lining is scraped with a curette |
| Pap smear | a study of cells collected from the cervix and vagina for early cancer detection |
| sentinel node biopsy | a biopsy taken from the first lymph node to receive drainage from a tumor |
| stereotactic biopsy | a biopsy taken with a needle using a computer-guided imaging system to locate suspicious tissue and remove samples for study |
| tomosynthesis | a 3D x-ray imaging technique used for detecting breast cancer |
