Term | Definition |

acute | a disease that is sudden, severe, and has a short course |
benign | not recurrent; describes a tumor that does not spread |
carcinoma | a malignant neoplasm made of epithelial cells |
chronic | a disease that progresses slowly and has a long course |
cyst | an abnormal filled sac or pouch |
edema | the accumulation of fluid in the tissues; swelling |
etiology | the cause of a disease |
Gram stain | a laboratory procedure that divides bacteria into gram positive (staining purple) and gram negative (staining red) groups |
hernia | the protrusion of an organ through an abnormal opening; aka rupture |
immunity | all the defenses one has against infectious disease |
inflammation | a localized response to tissue injury characterized by heat, pain redness, and swelling |
lesion | a distinct area of damaged tissue; aka injury, wound |
malignant | growing worse; describes a tumor that spreads to other tissues |
metastasis | the spreading from one part of the body to another; characteristic of cancer |
microorganism | an organism that is too small to be seen without a microscope |
neoplasia | abnormal and uncontrolled tissue growth |
neoplasm | a tumor or abnormal growth that is either benign or malignant |
parasite | an organism that grows on or in another organism and harms it |
pathogen | an organism capable of causing disease |
phagocytosis | the ingestion of organisms |
prolapse | a dropping or downward displacement of an organ or organ part |
pus | a mixture of fluid and white blood cells as a result of inflammation |
sarcoma | a malignant neoplasm that arises from connective tissue |
sepsis | the presence of harmful microorganisms or their toxins in the blood or other tissues |
toxin | a poison |
trauma | a physical or psychological wound or injury |
