weather
Term | Definition |
---|---|
latitude | its distance north or south of the equator |
longitude | run the length of Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole |
hemishphere | half of a sphere, or ball |
atmosphere | a jacket of gases that surrounds our planet |
weather | a specific event—like a rainstorm or hot day—that happens over a few hours, days or weeks |
climate | The weather found in a certain place over a long period of time |
polar | situated at or near, coming from, or relating to either of the earth's poles or the area inside |
continenial | being or concerning or limited to a continent especially the continents of North America or Europe. |
maritime | of, relating to, or bordering on the sea. |
clouds | a large collection of very tiny droplets of water or ice crystals. |
Condensation | the process by which water vapor (water in its gas form) turns into liquid |
Cirrus Clouds | high feathery clouds |
hygrometer | The instruments used to measure the humidity |
Map | a drawing of all or part of Earth's surface |
globe | a spherical model of Earth |
Cumulonimbus (storm clouds) | large, tall clouds that are dark on the bottom, bring thunderstorms, have a fuzzy outline toward the upper part of the cloud and may have a flat top called an anvil |
Cirrocumulus | high-altitude cloud form consisting of small white rounded masses usually in regular groupings. |
Stratocumulus | condensed water droplets. |
Cirrostratus | a fairly even high cloud layer that is darker than cirrus. |
Nimbostratus (steady rain) | Nimbostratus clouds are low-hanging, dark gray clouds that block the sun completely. They make steady rain or snow, but not thunderstorms or lightning. They form at warm fronts from altostratus clouds that sink lower to the ground and get thicker. |
wind | the movement of air near Earth's surface |
anemometer | an instrument that measures wind speed |
wind vane | an instrument that can measure wind direction |
coriolis effect | the apparent acceleration of a moving body on or near the Earth as a result of the Earth's rotation |
trade winds | air movements toward the equator |
prevailing westerlies | winds in the middle latitudes between 35 and 65 degrees latitude |
polar eastarlies | dry and cold prevailing winds that blow from the east. |
air pressure | the weight of air molecules pressing down on the Earth |
barometer | an instrument used to measure air pressure. |
Low pressure | when warm air rises up to make clouds and rain. (Lousy) |
High pressure | air molecules are held down resulting in clear, sunny days. |
cold front | when the cold air mass takes over the warm air mass, causing it go up into the atmosphere. |
warm front | when a warm air mass takes over a cold air mass, leaving warm air |
el niño | a natural climate phenomenon marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator |
