Divisions of the skeleton; bone formaiton; structure of a long bone; joints

bone | a calcified form of dense connective tissue; aka osseous tissue |
bone marrow | the soft material that fills the bone cavities |
yellow bone marrow | marrow that fills the central cavities of long bones |
red bone marrow | the formation site of blood cells located in spongy bone tissue |
bursa | a fluid-filled sac that reduces friciton near a joint |
cartilage | a dense connective tissue found in the skeleton, larynx, trachea, and bronchi; also the precursor to most bone tissue |
diarthrosis | a freely movable joint; aka synovial joint |
diaphysis | the shaft of a long bone |
epiphyseal plate | the growth region of a long bone that appears as the epiphyseal line when bone growth stops |
epiphysis | the irregularly shaped end of a long bone |
ilium | the large, flared, superior portion of the pelvic bone |
joint | the junction between 2 bones; aka articulation |
ligament | a strong band of connective tissue that joins one bone to another |
metaphysis | the bone region between the diaphysis and the epiphysis that acts as the growth region of a long bone during development |
ossification | the formation of bone tissue |
pelvis | the large ring of bone at the inferior trunk formed by the 2 hip bones (ossa coxae) joined to the sacrum and coccyx |
ossa coxae | the hip bones; each os coxae is formed by the ilium, ischium, and pubis |
periosteum | the fibrous membrane that covers a bone's surface |
resorption | the removal of a bone by breakdown and absorption into circulation |
skeleton | the body's bony framework that consists of 206 bones |
axial skeleton | the portion of the skeleton that contains 80 bones and is made of the skull, spinal, column, ribs, and sternum |
appendicular skeleton | the portion of the skeleton that contains 126 bones and is made of the arm and leg bones, shoulder girdle, and pelvis |
suture | an immovable joint |
symphysis | a slightly movable joint |
synovial fluid | the fluid in a freely movable (diarthrotic) joint |
synovial joint | a freely movable joint that has a joint cavity containing synovial fluid; aka diarthrosis |
tendon | a fibrous band of connective tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone |
thorax | the upper part of the trunk between the neck and abdomen formed by the 12 pairs of ribs and the sternum |
